A new book published by Emma Mason in association with The Fry Art Gallery. Artist and teacher, Walter Hoyle went to study at Beckenham School of Art before gaining a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art. War interrupted his studies until he was finally demobbed from India in 1947. This book tells the story of Hoyle’s life in Great Bardfield and his friendships with fellow artists including Edward Bawden, and John Aldridge, George Chapman Sheila Robinson, Marianne Straub and Michael Rothenstein. Hoyle’s work was varied and his love of printmaking was to influence a generation of students.
Edited by Julia and Andrew Collins with contributions from Chloe Cheese, Emma Mason and Martin Salisbury plus extracts from Walter Hoyle himself and an introduction by Denise Hoyle.
