Description
After the Conquest of England in 1066, the Norman rulers built castles as fortified residences, usually on higher defensive sites. Most of the castles remaining today date from the 12th century when there was civil war over the succession to the throne.
Walden Castle originally consisted of a keep, motte (earth mound) and inner and outer baileys (banks and ditches). What you see of the castle today is little more than the rubble core of the keep.
