VE Day 80th Anniversary – Thursday 08 May 2025

Join Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC) in commemorating 80 years since the end of World War II.  Marking the Allied victory in Europe, and the service and sacrifice of the Second World War generation, the events throughout the day on Thursday 08 May and are open to all.  Starting the day at 9am with the Town Crier’s Proclamation in the Market Square and Wreath laying at The War Memorial with the Royal British Legion will take place at 11am.

Following the wreath laying, wander to The Common for 11.30am, where you will see 33 Engineer Regiment EOD&S carry out their Physical Training session.  Groups of school children will then take part in an army led session of their own.  The fun training will be followed by a chance for them to talk with army personnel and get involved with interactive examples of their work.  Information and advice on army careers and the recruitment process will also be available for any students and members of the public alike.  If any other school groups would like to take part, please email; events@saffronwalden.gov.uk, in order for the session to be planned accordingly.

Drop into Jubilee Garden at 4.30pm to enjoy some wartime favourite tunes from the bandstand.  Hosted by Stuart Vant, ‘Dress up and dance!’ with The Golden Era Jazz Band, The Umbrella Big Band and Wimbish Military Wives Choir.  FREE Fish & Chips will be available; limited numbers, so arrive early for your ticket. Bring a chair or picnic blanket and your flags!  The Lighting of the Beacon will take place in Jubilee Garden at 9.30pm. Everyone welcome!
