GREAT FIRE OF RADWINTER 150th ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION

May 5 @ 12:00 - 16:00

In May 1874 the centre of Radwinter was razed to the ground by rapidly spreading flames, an event which later became known as the “Great Fire of Radwinter”. Fortunately no human lives were lost, but there was enormous destruction of property. By some miracle the Church (which was undergoing restoration work at the time) escaped the flames. The architects involved in the restoration work were Eden Nesfield and Temple Moore, who were subsequently to become involved in the design and rebuilding of the village centre, creating the attractive “Arts and Crafts movement” Village Hall with its two cottages, the Almshouses, and the row of houses in Church Hill.

The Bullock family of Radwinter were great benefactors, organising the funding and restoration of the centre of the village. On display at the exhibition will be letters, documents and newspaper articles from both local and national papers, along with images. These have been researched and retrieved with the help of the Archive Access Point at Saffron Walden Library, the Gibson Library, the fire display at Saffron Walden Museum, the Essex Record Office at Chelmsford, the Essex Fire Museum at Grays and others. Particular thanks are due to Zofia Everett (Saffron Walden Archivist).

Radwinter as a village community will certainly not have felt fortunate at the time, but the village centre became what it is today as a result of “The Great Fire”, and of the lucky pre-existing connection of two such well-renowned architects.

The exhibition will take place in Radwinter Village Hall (CB10 2TX) on Sunday 5th May between 12 noon and 4pm. All are invited to attend. The event is free and has been organised by the Friends of Radwinter Church. At 12:30pm there will be an opening address by Sir Jonathan Parker, who is a descendant of the Bullock family.
