D-Day 80th Anniversary – Thursday 06 June 2024
Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC) invites residents to mark the 80th Anniversary of D-Day on Thursday 06 June 2024.
Starting with the Town Crier’s Proclamation in the Market Square at 8am, this will be followed by raising of the official D-Day flag at 9am – this will remain flying for one week. Wreath laying with the Royal British Legion at The War Memorial will take place at 11am.
A ‘Group Battle Physical Training Session at 12.00 – 12.45pm on The Common led by 33 Engineer Regiment from Carver Barracks is open to everyone to take part (all ages / levels) – individuals (no need to book) and groups are welcome to attend. If groups such as schools, businesses, gyms, community groups / charities would like to take part, please email your interest by Monday 3rd June to; events@saffronwalden.gov.uk, in order for the session to be planned accordingly.
At 1pm in collaboration with Saffron Screen Pop-up Cinema, the film, The Great Escaper will be shown; Bernard Jordan played by Michael Caine, escapes from his care home to attend the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in France. Tickets for this are FREE; booking is essential and should be done in person at the Tourist Information Centre. There is an option to book a ‘fish & chips’ lunch – this day also celebrates National Fish and Chip Day! A chance to celebrate this iconic dish, and because of the strong links fish and chips had with WW2 it will form part of the commemoration; a charge of £7.00 will apply and it is essential to place orders by 4pm on Tuesday 04 June. NO FURTHER FOOD ORDERS – DEADLINE HAS NOW PASSED.
The reading of the International Tribute will be undertaken at 9.15pm alongside the lighting the Beacon at The Turf Maze on The Common, arrive from 8.15pm and enjoy the sounds of Wimbish Military Wives Choir beforehand.
