Spend a day out in our beautiful town

Come and spend a day out in our beautiful town and its surrounding area. This is the place to indulge yourself in a very unhurried and relaxed way. Many of the historic buildings were built by Quakers, and survive today in this town largely untouched by industrialisation. There are the remains of a small castle, the largest Parish Church in Essex and many other attractions for all ages both in the town and the surrounding area.

When arriving by car, even the main car park Swan Meadow is a delight with its pond and ducks. Take a stroll to the Market Square, where there are many independent shops and eating places. Bridge End Gardens is perfect for walking around the seven gardens and hedge maze, before moving to the common, which played host to a Royal Tournament in 1252. The Saffron Walden Castle and Museum is a must for historians. From all parts of the town you can see the spire of the Parish Church of St Mary, the largest church in Essex. A short distance from the church is the Close Garden, which is situated in the High Street. More shops to browse before relaxing in Jubilee Gardens and Bandstand where sometimes there is a live band playing for your entertainment.

Charming Tea rooms and local vineyards

Rest your feet awhile with a mid-morning coffee and cake or a delicious cream tea in one of the many charming tea rooms. Alternatively, "olde worlde" pubs with beamed ceilings and hundreds of years of history can be found offering liquid refreshments and tasty pub lunches. As you cross the district, stop and visit one of the local vineyards and enjoy tasting some of the great English Wines.

The market town has a wealth of specialist shops with unusual gifts, souvenirs and local produce, a good deal of these sourced from local British craft makers. See if you can spot a bargain in one of the rambling antique stores or enjoy a friendly "barter" in the colourful street markets.
