Great Dunmow Soapbox Race

Great Dunmow Soapbox Race

Jordan Bright

Town Centre,
Great Dunmow,

Great Dunmow Round Table is to host the very first Great Dunmow Soapbox Race this spring over the second May bank holiday weekend (Sunday, 27th May) inviting up to 60 teams to battle it out to be crowned champion of the Great Dunmow Soapbox Race to raise money for local causes.

Soapbox racing is a sport that invites everyday people to create homemade go karts powered by nothing but gravity and sheer courage to race down a hill going over jumps and other obstacles against the clock. Soapboxes are usually decorated with a novelty theme and are put through their paces by the obstacles sometimes resulting in spectacular crashes making it a great spectacle for those of all ages. We invite those brave enough aged 16 and over to race in the Great Dunmow Soapbox Race.

The sport was made famous by Red Bull in 2000 who brought the sport from America to Brussels and has since hosted over 100 soapbox races globally. The fastest speed ever recorded in a soapbox or gravity racer is 85.6 mph which was set by Guy Martin from the UK!

Entry to participate in the Great Dunmow Soapbox Race is £60.00 for a team of four and teams are encouraged to raise a minimum of £100.00 in sponsorship with all money going to the charity, Great Dunmow Round Table. Each team will have two chances to race down the 918 foot (280 meter) track and will be scored on quickest time, soapbox design and crowd pleasing by the judges. There is a £200 cash prize for the team with the highest overall score. Soapboxes must conform to regulations that can be found on the website where teams can also enter. Go to www.greatdunmowsoapboxrace.co.uk to find out more about entry requirements.

The soapbox race is free entry for spectators who can make an optional donation at the gate. Races begin at 11am and there will be other activities for all ages including a bar, food, bouncy castles and stalls. Professional comedians will be doing the commentating on the races.

The money raised will be going to Great Dunmow Round Table, a charity made up of men aged 18 - 45 who voluntarily hold fundraising events to raise funds for local charities and causes including schools, clubs and individuals who need a helping hand. Over the past 10 years the charity has raised over £250,000 for the local community through events such as fireworks night, Santa’s sleigh and concert nights. The soapbox race will be a fantastic addition to their already successful events that will bring local communities together.

Steve Eccles, Chairman of Great Dunmow Round Table says “We’re really excited to be hosting Great Dunmow’s first soapbox race, I think it will be very popular and will hopefully raise the charity a lot of money while bringing the community together. The Great Dunmow Soapbox Race wouldn’t be possible without our sponsors so a special thanks has to be said to our headline sponsor, Weston Homes.”

Sponsorship opportunities are still available if you would like to join the likes of Weston Homes, details can be found at www.greatdunmowsoapboxrace.co.uk/become-a-sponsor.
