How to get to Saffron Walden

Saffron Walden is just 14 miles (22km) from Stansted Airport, in the county of Essex, in the East of England.  It is 56 miles (90 km) from central London, and just 20 miles (32 km) from the historic university city of Cambridge.

Saffron Walden is 60 miles (96 km) from the ferry port at Harwich.

By car

Saffron Walden is easily reached from London via the M11 (exit junction 8, initially follow the signs for A120 Hertford, then B1383 for Saffron Walden)

Travelling from Cambridge, exit the M11 at junction 10 and follow the signs to Saffron Walden (A505, A1301, B184).

NB. Junction 9 of the M11 is restricted access.

Travelling from Colchester, stay on the A120 beyond the M11 roundabout (signposted Hertford), follow the A120 at the next roundabout, then at the next roundabout, take the B1383 signposted Saffron Walden.

By train

The nearest railway station to Saffron Walden is Audley End

The nearest station to Saffron Walden is Audley End, which is located on the Cambridge - London Liverpool Street line. Abellio Greater Anglia runs regular fast trains which stop at Audley End. 

Central Trains connect Stansted Airport to Audley End, Cambridge, and Birmingham.

Audley End station is 2 miles (3km) from Saffron Walden. Bus services 301, 59, 60 and 590 connect the station with the town (except on Sundays). Please contact the Tourist Information Centre for more information on these services.

If a taxi is needed, there are usually taxis waiting at the station.

Cyclists in sunny Saffron Walden

Saffron Walden lies close to the route of Sustrans Cycle Route 11, although please note that most of this route is on normal roads. For more details see

A new cycleway connecting Audley End station to the town of Saffron Walden, just under 2 miles away, is currently under construction, making it easier for cyclists to take an off-peak train to the local area and then to continue their journey by bike. The cycleway is due to be completed in early autumn 2015.

By ferry or via the Channel Tunnel

Ferry arriving at Harwich

The ferry port of Harwich is a popular choice for residents of the Netherlands and surrounding countries to visit Saffron Walden. After disembarking at Harwich, the drive to Saffron Walden takes approximately one and a half hours.

The Channel Tunnel links mainland Europe with England. Eurostar services arrive at St Pancras International station in London. Saffron Walden can be reached by taking an hour's train journey from London Liverpool Street to Audley End railway station, which is a short bus or taxi ride from the town.

Eurotunnel services arrive at Folkestone, which is 108 miles (174km) by road from Saffron Walden.
